Alexander Calder

Alexander Calder

Here's a cool thing that happened to me...When I got home from Alt Summit there was a package with my name on it sitting on the dining room table. When I opened it I found this happy, beautiful pop-up book called Alexander Calder: Meet the Artist with a hand written note from Princeton Architectural Press that said that it was coming out this February and they thought I might be like it. They got me. I love this guy. If you have a little artist at home, they will love learning about Calder.  He was just a big kid himself, making colorful art for art's sake.  I'm totally inspired to start working on Calder projects now. Enjoy the show!

Sweet Thing

Today is my sweet husband's 39th birthday.  When we visited the SFMOMA last week we both gushed over a Wayne Thiebaud cityscape.  Best known for his dreamy pictures of food, in milky pinks and yellows, I wanted to share some of his work today.  Still a practicing artist at the age of 92, Thiebaud is a contemporary of some of my favorite artists including Jasper Johns and Richard Diebenkorn. He was also a long time professor at UC Davis, our alma mater, which makes him extra special to us.

I love you Alexander Girard

It's no secret that my favorite artist/designer is Alexander Girard.  When I grow up  I want to be him.  Alas, I own only one textile featuring his work, but it's a pillow with boobies on it, so at least it's a good one.  I have tried to style my house in Girard, Jonathan Aldler kind way- kid friendly, happy colors, tongue in cheek graphic pattern with simple lines. So far I am most happy with the dining area, which features my grandparents 1950's Drexel table and chairs.  I am soon going to be adding their record player credenza and after moving my desk downstairs, I needed some DIY art for the wall. Looking to Girard for inspiration, I made three pieces using a lot of paint swatches lifted from the Home Depot.
